Counseling

CFCA's counselors are all Masters-level therapists, many of whom are Arizona Licensed Professional Counselors or Licensed Marriage and Family. In addition to extensive training, they bring practical life experience to their work. They have been school teachers, school counselors, social workers and missionaries. Additionally, some are foster and adoptive parents. Clients with limited financial means may choose to see a counseling intern and benefit from the affordable fees charged for their services.

Attachment Counseling

Children that have experienced early abuse, neglect or trauma often have difficulty attaching to primary caregivers. Early trauma issues are addressed with a variety of interventions appropriately paced to be respectful of the child’s needs. Treatment modalities include, Theraplay, drama, EMDR, movement therapy and a wide spectrum of play therapy techniques. These including art, sand tray, narrative story telling and metaphors using puppets. Sessions typically occur in a family setting although individual sessions may be provided as necessary. Therapists are also trained in Parent Child Interaction Therapy and Filial Therapy. These strengthen the parent/child relationship and create a more skilled parent. Therapists have a wide range of expertise in order to provide therapy for each child and family.

Home Care Training

Home Care Training (HCTC), formerly called therapeutic foster care, provides safe, nurturing environments for children with severe emotional disorders. HCTC parents are licensed as professional foster parents and are highly skilled individuals or couples that work in conjunction with a clinical treatment team to facilitate healing the child through the therapeutic milieu of a family. The expertise and involvement of the therapeutic foster home is the foundation of this unique treatment approach. The therapeutic foster parent creates an environment in which the treatment plan is implemented on a 24-hour basis.

In Home Family Support

Experienced therapeutic parents visit family members in their home to offer support in developing skills to effectively interact and/or manage children in the home. The providers have advanced understanding of the many causes and treatments for behavioral health issues that a family may experience. They support the family at home and in the community.

Play Therapy

A child’s language is play. By using play therapy, sand tray therapy and art therapy, counselors help children suffering from various difficulties: divorce, separation, depression abuse, post-traumatic stress or the loss of a parent or family member. CFCA’s counselors can help with assessment, behavior management, social skills, anger management, self-control and emotional healing. Children lack the cognitive maturity to benefit from talking through their problems. In a play therapy session, the child is able to work through problems as they create a world they can master. They practice social skills, overcome frightening feelings, and symbolically triumph over the upsets and traumas that have stolen their sense of well-being.
